Description
Field Court Tax Chambers is inviting applications for one 12 month pupillage commencing in October 2020 (or October 2019 if a suitable candidate is able to commence pupillage at that time). The deadline for applications is 5pm on 25 January 2019.

Pupils will be assigned to one pupil supervisor, but will additionally spend time with other members of Chambers. Pupillage will be a mixture of time spent in Chambers, attending the tribunals/courts, and possibly attending conferences or lectures out of Chambers. When in Chambers the pupil will spend time inter alia reading papers, drafting opinions and pleadings, carrying out research, and sitting in on conferences. At conferences, and in the tribunals/courts, pupils are expected to take comprehensive notes. It is highly unlikely that the pupil will receive instructions from clients during any stage of pupillage.

Chambers is fully committed to equal opportunity and diversity. We believe that everyone should have the ability to fulfil their potential and we abhor any form of prejudice or discrimination in relation to gender, race, ethnicity, disability, religion, sexuality, class or age. All applications for pupillage will be considered purely on the basis of merit.

Candidates are required to have a strong academic background (i.e. a First Class or good Upper Second Class degree). Further, candidates are expected to be able to demonstrate an interest in practising tax law (e.g. having studied some tax law).

The 12 month pupillage will carry an award of £50,000 which will be payable in equal monthly instalments in arrears. Up to £12,000 of the pupillage award can be drawn down in the year prior to the commencement of pupillage. Chambers reserves the right to require the repayment of the whole or any part of the amount drawn down in the event that the pupil does not complete six months of pupillage.

Our pupil will be entitled to two weeks’ holiday in every six month period. Any requests for further time off should be made to the pupil supervisor. The pupil has the right to terminate his or her pupillage after six months. Further, Chambers reserves the right to terminate a pupillage at any time and with immediate effect in the event of a serious breach of Chambers rules or the Bar Council Code of Conduct. This includes circumstances where the pupil engages in unprofessional conduct, is in material breach of rules concerning confidentiality, is rude to staff, colleagues or clients, or his or her work is regularly of a highly unsatisfactory quality.

There are three stages to the application process, and unfortunately some candidates will not progress to the second or third rounds. The first round of the selection process will involve a review of all applications to determine which candidates should be invited for an interview. The second round will consist of an interview. Candidates who are selected for the third round will be given a written assessment (and possibly an additional interview). A decision will then be taken as to whether one of the third round candidates should be offered pupillage.

A decision whether to retain the pupil as a tenant will be taken towards the end of the 12 month pupillage. There is no guarantee that a tenancy will be offered to the pupil, but the expectation when offering pupillage is that the pupil will be of sufficient calibre to merit an offer of tenancy.

How to apply
Applications for pupillage should be sent by email to pupillage@fieldtax.com to arrive by the deadline of 5pm on 25 January 2019 and should be in the form of a covering letter and a CV.
