Description
42 Bedford Row is a leading common law set, now with over 100 members. Our members’ practices are broadly split between Civil and Family law. Eighteen of our barristers in chambers are listed in their fields in both Chambers UK Guide and The Legal 500 for 2019. Past members include Rose LJ, Janet Smith LJ, Leveson LJ, David Clarke J, Caroline Swift J, King J and Stephen Stewart J.
Our pupils benefit from the experience of a broad spectrum of work, which includes:

• Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury
• Family
• Contract / Commercial disputes
• Employment
• Professional Negligence
• Property-related matters including Landlord and Tenant.
• Public law and local government

What we are looking for

Members of Chambers are instructed by a diverse range of solicitors on behalf of private clients, insurance companies, local government and other public authorities, as well as directly by clients themselves. We seek exceptional candidates who can demonstrate a high level of self-motivation and intellectual ability, coupled with the social skills to communicate with, and on behalf of, a wide range of clients.

Pupillage

Chambers will recruit one or two twelve-month pupils. Each pupil will be allocated to at least 3 different pupil supervisors during the course of his/her twelve months, to ensure that they experience as broad a range of our work as practicable. Pupil supervisors ensure that a proper work/life balance is achieved. In their second six months of pupillage, pupils can expect to be in court regularly, dealing with their own cases.

Funding

Fee income derived in the second six months of pupillage is additional to the pupillage award, which pupils receive monthly. Pupils who started with us in October 2018 have received an award of £28,800 and in addition we will guarantee earnings (NB. not receipts) in the second six months of £15,000. The awards are reviewed annually.

Tenancy

At 42 Bedford Row we have an excellent record of recruiting tenants from our own pupils; we believe in investing in our pupils and offering tenancy to all those who demonstrate that they have the skills required to become effective and successful members of chambers. We operate an Equality and Diversity policy that is adhered to during the pupillage selection process and throughout pupillage itself.
