Description
The Family Pupillage October 2020

36 Family aims to recruit one pupil to undertake a specialist family law pupillage commencing in the autumn of 2020. The family pupillage award is £45,000, as described in more detail below.

36 Family is the specialist family law practice team within The 36 Group. The team is sub-divided into four sub-groups:

• Family Finance
• Children and Modern Families
• Care
• Alternative Dispute Resolution

Over the last decade, 36 Family has established itself as one of the leading family law sets in London, with notable practitioners in all areas of family law. We have been at the cutting edge of the development of family law in a number of areas, with a host of important cases in the UK Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal in recent years. Our members, our team and our clerking team are regularly shortlisted for and/or win the major industry family law awards.

We are also highly regarded for our work in non-court dispute resolution, including within the team some of the country’s leading family arbitrators and a number of skilled mediators. Where possible we will endeavour to give our pupils experience of attending mediations, arbitrations and other non-court dispute resolution.

Much of our domestic work has an international dimension. There are occasional opportunities to deal with disputes in other jurisdictions.

The pupillage will provide the highest quality training and experience in the full range of family law, including financial remedies, disputes over children (public and private law), unmarried couples, surrogacy and the international aspects of practice in all those areas. Our pupil will also benefit from the unique composition of The 36 Group and will have the opportunity to gain experience where necessary in areas of law closely related to family law, for example probate and trusts and criminal law.

We have always regarded our pupils and our junior tenants as our future and we seek to invest our time and resources to ensure that they develop as fully as possible. Pupils are always recruited with a view to offering tenancy at the end of the 12 months if they satisfy our criteria.

Although pupils and very junior tenants initially practice across the whole range of family law, we encourage specialisation into one or two of the above sub-groups within a few years.

In the event that candidates for pupillage are invited to interview, interviewing days will be on two Saturdays in early April 2019.

The successful pupil will receive an award of £45,000 for the pupillage year, which includes £15,000 by way of guaranteed personal earnings during the second six months. By arrangement, part of the award, up to a maximum of £10,000, can be paid in the year preceding the pupillage to assist with the costs of undertaking the vocational course (on condition that the candidate completes pupillage with The 36 Group).
