About Us.

Twenty Essex is one of the leading International Commercial sets. We are at the forefront of developments in a wide range of areas of law, including arbitration, banking and financial services, civil fraud and asset tracing, commodities and international trade, company law, energy and infrastructure, EU & competition, insolvency and restructuring, (re)insurance, intellectual property, jurisdiction, conflicts and enforcement, media and telecoms, public and administrative law, public international law, shipping and technology.

We aim to recruit the best candidates, based on merit only, and are looking for those who demonstrate the aptitude and desire to succeed in our areas of expertise. We are proud of our high retention rate: in the past five years over 80% of our pupils have been offered tenancy.

We are committed to encouraging and supporting fair access to the Bar. We were the first Chambers to adopt Rare's Contextual Recruitment System (CRS) to review applications in the context of candidates’ socio-economic background. This allows us to consider whether candidates have overachieved in light of their wider personal circumstances. Applicants for pupillage and mini pupillage will receive an invitation to complete a CRS questionnaire as part of the application process.

Pupillage.

We offer an award of £70,000 per annum. Two thirds of this award is paid during the first six months and the balance during the second six. Pupils are permitted to draw down up to £25,000 of this award before commencing pupillage. We contribute up to £100 towards the cost of travel to the pupillage interview (on production of receipts).

We aim to hold our pupillage interviews on a consecutive Friday and Saturday in the second half of March. During the week before interviews the shortlisted candidates are asked to complete a short piece of written work. That work is anonymised and then reviewed before the interviews take place.

Mini Pupillage.

Applicants will only be considered for pupillage if they have completed, or been offered, a mini pupillage in Chambers. Details of our mini pupillage application process are set out on the mini pupillage page of our website. The next deadline for mini pupillage applications is 31 January 2020.

Tenancy Offers to Pupils.

All decisions about tenancy are taken purely on merit. Our policy is straightforward: if you achieve the tenancy standard, you will be offered tenancy irrespective of space and the number of other pupils. New tenants enjoy generous concessions in their first year. They can expect a wide-ranging commercial practice and may have the opportunity to travel worldwide, not least to our Singapore annexe.
