About 1kbw
1 King’s Bench Walk is a leading barristers’ chambers in London, specialising in family law. There are 60 barristers, including 13 Queen’s Counsel. Our commitment to excellence has long been recognised and in the recent past we have been awarded:
‘Top Tier Chambers 2020’ Legal 500, 2020
‘nail it for being the set that best combines top-quality money and children practitioners’ as well as those who ‘scale the heights in the intellectually highbrow family law/human rights jurisdictional disputes’. ‘One of the strongest children law chambers’ and ‘a major player’ for complex financial matters’ – Legal 500, 2020

"They are as strong on money as they are on children and they've got strength and depth in both silks and juniors." – Chambers & Partners, 2020

Shortlisted for Silk of the Year at the Chambers UK Bar Awards 2019 – Philip Marshall QC

‘Shortlisted for Family Law Junior Barrister of the Year – Deepak Nagpal’ – Family Law Awards, 2019

‘Shortlisted for Family Law Young Barrister of the Year – Anna Sutcliffe’ – Family Law Awards, 2019

1KBW has a pre-eminent reputation in family law, both nationally and internationally. We are consistently ranked by the legal directories in the top tiers (‘Band 1 & 2’) of leading sets for family law. Our barristers have been at the cutting edge of the development of family law and have been in most of the ground-breaking cases over the last two decades.
We also have one of the most innovative and experienced Dispute Resolution teams in the country providing arbitration, mediation and Early Neutral Evaluation.
Pupillage at 1KBW
Our Application form can be found on our website https://www.1kbw.co.uk/careers/pupillage/

Application for pupillage commencing in October 2021 will open on the 7th January 2020 at 11:00am and close on the 7th February 2020 at 11:00am in line with the Pupillage Gateway timetable managed by the Bar Council.
1KBW offers two specialist family law pupillages each year. Each pupillage is full time and for twelve months. During the twelve months each pupil will be allocated to three different pupil supervisors, each of whom will be a specialist family law practitioner.
Pupils will have the opportunity to see a wide range of specialist family law work including both matrimonial finance and children cases.

1KBW has a reputation for recruiting the most talented pupils and then providing training and support that is second to none. We proactively try to recruit our tenants from our pupils. In the last decade 20 of the 20 pupils in chambers have been offered tenancy. For that reason, our selection procedure is rigorous.
We offer each pupil a (tax free) grant of £35,000 plus expenses which is paid during the first 6 months. In addition, pupils may retain any income which they earn in the second six months. The reputation of 1KBW is such that our pupils are regularly briefed from the outset.
The first six months (non-practising) are divided between two pupil supervisors, and the second six months (practising period) are divided between two pupil supervisors. Chambers also provides ‘in-house’ advocacy training.
“Pupillage at 1KBW means learning first hand from practitioners who are shaping family law today. Monthly advocacy training sessions and frequent feedback from pupil supervisors ensure that you will be ready to manage your own cases in the second six. 1KBW is a very welcoming set and its members go out of their way to involve and support the pupils” – a pupil at 1KBW
