A pupillage with Chambers will give you exposure to a wide variety of high quality commercial and international work and the chance to work alongside barristers who are recognised as leaders in their specialist fields. To develop your skills and confidence as an advocate and to equip you for a successful career at the Bar you will be given a large amount of junior advocacy work during your pupillage and early years as a junior tenant.
Assessment is a major part of pupillage but not its aim. The aim of the pupillage year is to develop the talent of our pupils so that each of them reaches the required objective standard for tenancy. We want our pupils to succeed. Our pupils are not in competition with one another for a tenancy and we welcome applications from candidates from all backgrounds and from all universities.

In considering prospective candidates for pupillage or mini-pupillage, we concentrate on four criteria:
- Evidence of the requisite intellectual ability, as distinct from pure legal knowledge. At this stage intellectual ability is usually measured by performance in university and school examinations and at interview and other experience. We usually also require applicants to complete a piece of written work during the course of the selection process.
- Potential as an advocate both in oral and written advocacy.
- Personal qualities such as self-reliance, independence, integrity, reliability and the capacity to work effectively with clients, colleagues and staff in Chambers.
- Motivation to succeed in a career at the Bar, including the steps taken to acquire the personal qualities required of a barrister.
Starting your pupillage:
At the outset, there is a full induction and you are introduced to the members of Chambers and staff. There is a pleading and advices course, run by a junior member of Chambers, where key topics are considered and pupils have the chance, in a non-assessed environment, to raise any questions they may have.
You will be allocated a pupil supervisor in October. Pupils share their supervisor's room and accompany them in all aspects of their practice. You will move to a new pupil supervisor in January and again in April. You may sometimes also work with other members of Chambers if there is a case of special interest but only with the agreement of your supervisor and where there is a clear educational purpose.
The first six months:
You will attend court and conferences with your pupil supervisor. You will assist your pupil supervisor with their work, for instance by carrying out detailed legal research. You will also draft legal documents including statements of case and opinions.
The second six months:
During your second six months, you will take on an increasing amount of your own court work. We place a strong emphasis on advocacy and support our pupils in gaining valuable practical experience. You can expect to be in court on your own about once a week up to the tenancy decision and more thereafter.
In addition to unassessed advocacy training, you will take part in two assessed moots during your pupillage. The pupil supervisors provide feedback to the pupils following the moots, which are normally judged by members of the judiciary. Prior to the practising period of pupillage, there is also a specific training session on the types of applications and hearings which you are likely to undertake during your second six months.
We aim to provide a friendly and sociable atmosphere. Pupils are included in Chambers social events throughout the year.
What award is offered?
The total annual award is £65,000, comprising a £55,000 award (of which £5,000 is paid immediately upon acceptance of the offer and a further £15,000 can be drawn down during the BPTC year) and guaranteed earnings in the second 6 months of £10,000. Pupils are allowed to keep any earnings from their second 6 months, including anything earned in excess of the £10,000 guarantee. New tenants have a guaranteed income of £240,000 (net of Chambers expenses), in addition to their pupillage award, over the first three years of practice.

We cannot guarantee that any pupil will be offered a tenancy, but we recruit by objective standards, and any pupil reaching those standards will be taken on, regardless of issues such as accommodation or work available. We give every assistance to pupils who have not been offered a tenancy when seeking places in other Chambers. We also find that our former pupils are sought-after by good firms of solicitors.
