Chambers was set up in 1974 by six young barristers determined that the spirit which inspired the early Law Centre movement should find a place at the Bar. A strong commitment to the Legal Aid system and to offering legal representation to those disadvantaged by poverty and discrimination formed our founding philosophy. Our areas of practice include civil actions against the police, civil liberties, community care, court of protection, criminal defence, employment, environmental law, extradition, family law, Gypsy and Traveller rights, housing, immigration, international law, inquests, mediation, mental health, nationality, planning, prison law, public and administrative law, civil litigation and professional negligence. Chambers now has over 200 members, with 26 QCs, and though our range of work and clientele is immeasurably broader, our original commitment remains and underpins our practice.

Our team is highly ranked in the legal directories and consistently wins awards. In 2015 we won the Legal 500 Crime Set of the Year Award and we have since been shortlisted for the award a further two times. We won Crime Silk of the Year 2019 at Chambers Bar Awards, Crime Silk of the Year 2019 at the Legal 500 Awards and have been shortlisted for Crime Silk of the Year 2020 at the Legal 500 Awards. Please visit the following page on our website for further content and updates on our award winning Criminal Defence Team:

The successful candidate will be offered comprehensive training during a structured 12-month pupillage. This will involve working with leading criminal practitioners. Pupils will be allocated a different supervisor for each 6-month period, with a satellite supervisor. In the second six months of pupillage, our pupils tend to be in court on a daily basis. Additionally, pupils will benefit from internal courses in substantive law and advocacy.

All pupils will receive £35,000 over the 12 months of pupillage, comprising of an award of £29,000 plus guaranteed earnings of £6,000 in the second six. Pupils will receive all earnings during their second six, which will not be subject to a management fee or Chambers rent.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: applicants must note that this is a separate recruitment being run parallel to the general Garden Court Chambers general pupillage recruitment. Applicants cannot apply to both Garden Court Chambers pupillage adverts. In doing so, you application will be ejected from both openings.

Chambers only recruits via the Pupillage Gateway. This applies to all candidates, including those with exemptions, in accordance with our commitment to recruiting pupils on an equal opportunities basis. Our First Round of pupillage interviews for shortlisted candidates will be on Saturday 17 April 2021. The Final Round of pupillage interviews will take place across Saturday 1 May and Sunday 2 May 2021. Candidates are encouraged to visit our website for further details:

Mini pupillages are not currently available due to restrictions in place at many courts in response to social distancing rules. Please visit our website for further details, for if anything was to change in this regard, we would publish this news on our website and on twitter (@gardencourtlaw):
