College Chambers is a friendly and welcoming set with an excellent reputation. Chambers has 31 tenants. We are a busy, common law set, with a strong emphasis on family and civil work. Full details of the work undertaken can be found on our website. Applicants should be aware that very little criminal work is undertaken by members of Chambers. Funding is in line with the BSB award of a grant of £7,864 payable monthly during the First VI, and guaranteed earnings of a minimum of £7,864 during the Second VI. However, we expect our second six pupils to earn significantly more than this.

We are offering up to two pupillages commencing Autumn 2021 and up to two pupillages commencing Spring 2022. This is subject to available funding and suitable candidates. Chambers will inform the candidates in line with the single recruitment timetable.

Application Process

All applications should take the form of a typed letter (maximum 1 side of A4 and minimum font size 11), and curriculum vitae (maximum 2 sides of A4). Applications should be sent to Neil Maton, Head of Pupillage. Applications by e-mail are NOT accepted. The closing date is in line with the Pupillage Gateway, 11.00am on the 8th February 2021. Applicants should ensure there are 3 copies of their letter and CV enclosed. Please note it will be the applicant’s responsibility to show that their application was received by the closing date.

Applications will not be acknowledged upon receipt, but it is hoped that all candidates will be contacted by end of April to inform them as to the progress of their application.

If an applicant has previously applied for pupillage with College Chambers this must be highlighted in your application. Please ensure that any changes are outlined in the covering letter.

All applications are first considered together and marked by at least two members of Chambers within a specified time frame. Chambers look for evidence of intellectual ability, clarity, cogent reasons for applying to Chambers and demonstrable evidence of the candidate’s ability to do the job of a pupil barrister. A short list is then drawn up. The first round interview is generally a short interview of no more than 30 minutes. It is conducted by a panel of at least three people. We aim for at least one member of the panel to sit in on all first round interviews.

The second round interview is a whole assessment day in Chambers followed by an advocacy exercise and interview. The assessment day aims to provide the candidate with the opportunity to demonstrate their written and oral advocacy skills, including their ability to analyse digest and assimilate information. Lunch will be provided. The final interview will be conducted by a panel of at least three members of Chambers of varying seniority.

The dates for the interviews will be in line with the Gateway timetable. We aim to post the dates for 1st and 2nd interviews on our website in due course. Candidates selected for interview will be invited by email to attend an interview.

Chambers complies with the Bar Standards Board pupillage requirements and is committed to ensuring fairness and promoting equality and diversity in its recruitment process.
