Description
This year we have been privileged to be selected by the Council of the Inns of Court for the Pupillage Matched Funded Scheme and we are therefore able to offer two 12-month pupillages starting in 8 November 2021 & May 2022, with a possibility of a paralegal position immediately prior to commencement of pupillage.

Pupillage will be offered in our busy Criminal Defence team. We are looking for candidates who have an interest publicly funded work as our firm primarily carries out legal aid work. Pupils can expect to be exposed to a wide variety of matters in the Magistrates Court and in the Crown Court, as well as occasionally in the Court of Appeal in the first six. They will be expected to carry out drafting assignments for practising advocates and assist with legal research. Towards the end of the first six, they will be shadowing advocates primarily in the Magistrates Court where they will in turn conduct their first hearings in the second six and will be in court on a daily basis. As in-house counsel, pupils can also expect to appear in the Crown Court at an early stage in their second six conducting work appropriate to their level of experience and abilities.

Our last pupil assisted in complex matters in the Crown Court in her first six. Her practice has quickly become Crown Court focused during her second six, conducting, inter alia, PTPHs for matters allocated to her as trial counsel, appeals against sentence and conviction and committals for sentence. She is now a tenant and conducts her own Crown Court trials. Our current pupil, despite the current pandemic, is looking forward to being on her feet and to a busy practice starting in January 2021.

We have also launched an in-house advocacy training programme this year to best prepare our pupils before they get on their feet in the second six.

We seek to recruit pupils with a view to tenancy to join our full-time Crown Court Advocacy team.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate enthusiasm and passion in defending clients with tenacity and energy, as well as a sound understanding of their ethical duties. All applicants must also be able to show that they are on top of the current legislation/case law and possess the ability to make persuasive and succinct submissions on their feet.

Applicants who can demonstrate a commitment to practising at the Criminal Bar, an understanding and interest in the Employed Bar, relevant work experience if there is a gap since completion of the BPTC and good academic results will be invited to a first round interview. This interview will be an opportunity to get to know the candidate and involve questions about their application as well as current legal affairs. Successful interviewees will then be shortlisted for a final round interview involving an advocacy exercise.

We will consider applicants with a Lower Second Class degree who can demonstrate outstanding relevant experience and/or results in postgraduate studies.

We will endeavour to inform all unsuccessful candidates as soon as possible but please bear in mind we have busy practices. We may also provide limited feedback to those who request it.

We follow the Pupillage Gateway timetable.
