Pupillage 2023

St Philips is in a position to offer a minimum of 6 Pupillages.

St Philips Barristers is "a stellar set comprised of counsel of exceptional ability", not our words, but what our clients say about us in the latest edition of Chambers and Partners UK Bar Guide.

This is the standard we set at St Philips; this is our benchmark. We are very proud of the national and international reputation we have built, our knowledge, expertise and client care across a wide range of practice areas.

We are a professional, highly motived and inclusive set of chambers that encourages and nurtures talent.

With a reputation for excellence to uphold, we are not a set that rests on its laurels or luxuriates in its past successes. We are seeking the next generation of barristers who have the talent, ambition and tenacity to further raise the bar.

We have six core practice groups: Business and Property, Crime, Employment, Family, Personal Injury & Clinical Negligence and Regulatory. All of our practice groups are ranked in the legal directories.

St Philips (incorporating 1, 2, and 7 Fountain Court) have an outstanding pedigree and success rate of producing QC’s and Judicial Appointments. To date, we can proudly boast the appointment of: 1 Supreme Court Judge, 4 Lord Justices of Appeal (including one former and the current President of the Family Division), 10 High Court Judges (including the current Presiding Judge of the Midland Circuit), 47 Circuit Judges, 6 Employment Tribunal Judges, 5 District Judges; and 39 Queen’s Counsel.

Our pupillages offer a blend of education, encouragement and independence, designed to be both stimulating and enjoyable.

During pupillage, you will be encouraged and mentored not only in the academic side of pupillage, but also the professional side of life at the modern Bar. You will be introduced to clients at an early stage, encouraged to attend networking and marketing events and the regular seminars that we run in-house, thereby building your confidence and providing you with invaluable exposure to the local legal market.

During your first six months, your pupil supervisor will make sure that you experience different areas of law and the contrasting styles of our members. You will accompany members to court and sit in on conferences, be involved in legal research; and collaborate on cases in a tailored program designed to build your knowledge and experience.

During your second six, you will be given access to broad range of your own advisory and advocacy work in order to gain invaluable experience in the courts and learn the skills that will allow you to build a successful practice.

Unlike a number of chambers, we only offer a pupillage if tenancy is available at the end of it; we want you to succeed and we will do everything we can to support you to get there.
We are a friendly and approachable team who actively make time to support barristers; especially pupils and junior tenants. You will find help and advice freely available from members at all levels of seniority, as you find your feet and continuing through tenancy as you develop your own practice.

We are seeking enthusiastic, exceptional and well-rounded individuals with good intellectual ability, a practical approach to problem solving and a demonstrable passion and hunger for a career at the Bar.

A pupillage at St Philips is a remarkable opportunity for applicants with sound judgement, mental agility, an appetite to learn; and desire to put theoretical knowledge into practice.

Importantly, we really aren’t concerned what your background is, if you believe you have the qualities that we are seeking, then we welcome your application. We are happy to make all reasonable adjustments for those with disabilities, either for the purpose of making an application for, or undertaking, a pupillage in Chambers.

In 2022 we are recruiting a minimum of 6 pupils across all specialisms to start October 2023. The Pupillage award for 2023 will be £50,000. £25,000 is payable over the course of the first six months in equal instalments. We expect you to earn a similar amount in your second six and we provide a billing guarantee of £25,000 for this second period.

We will meet the costs of the courses which are compulsory during Pupillage. Upon the satisfactory completion of the first six months, we provide you with your own copy of one substantial practice text for your specialist area such as: Archbold; Civil Procedure Rules (“The White Book”), or the Family Court Practice (“The Red Book”).
